Why live in Portland?

Portland has it all. Close to the mountains, the ocean, lakes Portland has anything and everything you could ever need. It is an outdoor lovers paradise. Not into the outdoors? Spend time at one of the many coffee shops or bars there are pretty much on every corner. Portland is home and I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.

Real Estate allows me to combine my business background with my love of people. Being able to meet new people and help them find their dream condo/home is exciting to me. I love that my clients become my lifelong friends!

NICOLE CURRA

Favorite places to travel?

Traveling is the best food for the soul. Everyone should see a different place outside from where they grew up. I am grateful to have seen so much of our beautiful planet. I think the place that has resonated with me most is Italy. The longevity of its history, and the preservation of culture is incredible! Oh and the food! Loved the food!

What is your astrological sign

My birthday is in July so that makes me a Cancer. I am definitely very nurturing, loyal, and I love the beach! I am also very nocturnal and can sometimes be quite crabby in the morning…

MARCUS KIRLIN

What do you like about Portland?

I like that it’s a small urban city, but with a lot of variety. I appreciate that it’s quiet, clean, and surrounded in nature all while having a good variety in food and high economic growth.

What are your hobbies?

My biggest hobby growing up would probably be skateboarding. I also enjoy tennis and golf.

What interests you?

Investment research, particularly in real estate and stocks. The psychology in capital markets is also very fascinating to me.

Where else have you lived?

Although I grew up in Portland, I have three nationalities – Japan, US, and Canada. Half of my extended family lives in Japan, so I find Tokyo to be like a second home. I spent most of my summers there until I was 16, and then I went again when I was 19 and lived there for a year. Tokyo is a very fun place.

What do you like about your work?

First of all I get to work with good people at Sean Z Becker Real Estate in the beautiful area, South Waterfront. Secondly, real estate is tangible, and seeing the prices fluctuate based on the market’s anticipations is super interesting to me. I’m a curious person, so it’s a good fit too.

PHUONG HART

What kind of a name is “Phuong”?

I get asked this question all the time. “Phuong” is a Vietnamese name meaning phoenix. I was born in Vietnam and came to the United States when I was only four years old. I am so proud to keep and use my given name. Don’t worry if you mispronounce it the first (or fifth) time…you certainly wouldn’t be the only one to do so.

What do you do in your free time?

For me “free” time means “family and friends” time. I love to spend time with our friends and family getting together for dinner, excursions to the coast or Hood River or just gathering for a picnic in our neighborhood park.

How can you live in a high rise with a family?

Very well actually! My husband and I moved to the South Waterfront neighborhood in its early stages with the plan of possibly moving into a more traditional suburban neighborhood once we started a family. Ten years and two kids later, we are still here and loving every moment of it! The neighborhood is perfect for raising a family. We have a beautiful park and greenway to play in, restaurants, schools and shops are within walking distance and no yard means that our weekends are free for playing… not yardwork.

KIRBY ARKES

Favorite Portland neighborhood?

As a Portland native, its hard to choose. My current neighborhood is the Pearl District, specifically the Brewery Blocks. I’ve lived there for a combined 6 years, and I love having some of the city’s best beer restaurants right outside my door.

Best place you’ve ever been?

Portland of course! But, Amsterdam is a very close second. The people, the culture, the architecture, the canals – I can’t wait to go back.

Greatest accomplishment?

I practically grew up on a bike with my Dad. My first memory is riding in the back of a Burley trailer, and till this day we go on week-long cycling trips together. As a result, I have camped in over 80 different towns in Oregon, and ridden through many more. Having experienced all of Oregon, including the places far off the beaten path, is something that I am very proud of. We are truly fortunate to live in such a beautiful state.

How would your friends describe you?

Always laughing.

One thing most people don’t know about you?

In my next life, I want to be an Astronaut. I love everything outer space. I took every astronomy class available when I attended the University of Oregon, and I still want to know more.

Favorite quote?

“Be not simply good, be good for something.” – Henry David Thoreau

SANAM “SAM” DOWLATDAD

Why real estate over law?

I get this question a lot – why switch careers after going to law school and practicing for so many years? To be completely honest, I wasn’t completely happy being a trial lawyer. My clients always came to me because of a bad thing. My role was to fix a mistake or wrong that had already occurred. I enjoyed helping people, but it was always because of a bad event occurring in their lives. Despite successful outcomes, I was naturally associated with the unpleasantness of the event that brought them to my door. But in real estate, I get to meet people in the beginning of a happy process – to find the perfect home, or to sell their family home and help them get the best return on their investment. The result, whether buying or selling, is one of elation and joy. And that’s important to me, not just as a broker, but as a human being. I like the process, and most of all, I like the happily ever after.

What words of wisdom would you pass on to your childhood self?

Three things I would pass on to my childhood self:
1) Do what truly makes you happy and you will find success.
2) Always be kind, even if it’s not the “cool” thing to do.
3) When things get tough, always remember “This too shall pass…”

If you could be any age for a week, what age would that be?

If I could be one age for a week, I think I’d go back to the summer after my high school school graduation. I was 17 years-old and didn’t seem to have a care in the world. My friends and I were full of excitement – ready to move on to the next phase in our lives, but knowing we needed to enjoy every moment of our last summer together before we went off to college and everything changed.

What would be your “perfect” day?

Since I grew up on the Oregon Coast, I love everything about the beach. I also love being around people. By nature, I’m a very social person and don’t enjoy being alone. An epic day for me would be spent at the beach, under the warm sun, with family and good friends.

VANESSA KING

Portland is a beautiful and unique city full of surprises. I love the pride that Portlanders feel for their city.

What can’t you stop talking about?

How hot the Portland real estate market is!

How does your education connect to your professional career?

I am proud to say that I do in fact use my Psychology degree in my career. Managing a handful of distinct personalities in an office should require one!

What most excites you about your work and the contribution you can make?

Buying a home is one of the biggest financial decisions in most people’s lives. It’s exciting to be a part of that process and to help ensure the success of everyone involved!

SCOTT SHOJI

Why Portland?

There is something so very accessible about Portland that charms and endears me. It feels intimate and easily navigable for a “big “city. The food culture, alternative activities, green space everywhere, walking and cycling is embraced and you are a short drive from the ocean, mountains, rivers and forests.

What are you doing in your free time?

You can usually find me artfully dodging or skillfully kicking rubber balls in my adult Dodgeball and Kickball leagues. I try and keep youthful at heart and these leagues help with that. Otherwise, I can be found hiking and exploring the Pacific Northwest with my wife Chelsea and my daughter Elora.

Favorite Place Traveled To?

This is probably a tie between Mürren, Switzerland in the Swiss Alps where I proposed to my wife or Cambodia where I traveled with my brother and sister and explored the ruins of the Khmer Empire all over the country. Each were places I had to keep reminding myself that they actually existed when I woke up every morning.

What can always be found close to you?

A cup of coffee and my computer.

Why Real Estate?

I have always loved the feeling of home. It is both a sense of place and a feeling of comfort. I find immense enjoyment in being able to help people find their home, whether that is handing over the keys to that very first home purchase, or helping someone take the next steps in life by selling the place that memories were made in. Not many careers can give that sense of satisfaction at the end of the day.

SEAN Z BECKER

Where can we find you when you are not working?

You can find me kitesurfing, cycling, wine tasting, or spending the day with my wife and young son hiking in the Columbia River Gorge.

What most excites you about your work and the contribution you make?

I enjoy getting to know people and developing friendships with our clients and community.  It has been incredible to watch how our “work” has transcended into personal friendships and a deeper meaning to our clients and community than just selling homes…I find what we do everyday to be very rewarding!

Favorite Food and Beverage?

I love any type of Mexican food!  I also happen to love Oregon wines….

Favorite Place to Travel To?

Hood River, Baja, and anywhere outside of the U.S.  My family and I love to see the world!

Why Real Estate?

I’m passionate about working with people and I love all the wonderful homes and neighborhoods of Portland.
